Facts About Sound Waves

Fun facts you don't know about sound waves:

Sound comes as a result of vibrations. These vibrations create sound waves which move through mediums(solid, liquid, or gas) before reaching our ears.
Our ears vibrate in a similar way to the original source of the vibration, allowing us to hear many different sounds.
Some of the facts about sounds:

  • Dogs can hear sound at a higher frequency than humans, allowing them to hear noises that we can’t.

  • The loud noise you create by cracking a whip occurs because the tip is moving so fast it breaks the speed of sound!
  • When traveling through water, sound moves around four times faster than when it travels through air

  • The sound of thunder is produced by rapidly heated air surrounding lightning which expands faster than the speed of sound.

  • The ear is not the only detector people and animals have. Sound waves can even be felt by different parts of the body. Sometimes you can feel the vibrations thunder makes while you are actually hearing it.

  • The brain receives these messages from the auditory nerve. The messages come in fast and furious, in a jumble of confusion, but the brain has the ability to sort them into an organized pattern. This way we can understand the sounds we hear as music or human speech.

  • Believe it or not, there is no sound in space because there are no molecules there. Sound cannot travel through space since there are no molecules to travel through. Here on Earth, we have air molecules which vibrate to our ears.

  • The most loudest natural sound on Earth is caused by an erupting volcano.

  • It is almost impossible to define music. However, most describe it as significant arrangement of sounds.
  • Flies are not able to hear any sounds at all.

  • Most white cats that have blue eyes are often unable to hear sounds and are usually deaf.

  • Dolphins are capable of hearing sounds underwater from as far as 15 miles away.

  • The majority of cows which listen to music end up producing more milk than those that do not.

  1. Very interesting! Such facts make physics far more interesting than it actually is. Try slipping some quotes every now and then in your classroom, I'm sure students will get more attentive and focused.
